SCENE DESCRIPTION:

At approximately 02:15 hours on May 16, 2026, Holyoke PD received two 911 calls reporting a motor vehicle accident on Route 202 southbound. The first caller reported hearing a loud crash and screaming from a nearby residence. The second caller, a passing motorist, reported a vehicle off the road in a wooded area.

Officers arrived at 02:28 hours. A single vehicle was located approximately 30 feet off the roadway, lodged against a large oak tree at the edge of a wooded area. The vehicle was facing northeast (perpendicular to the road), having left the road at roughly a 90-degree angle.

Vehicle Orientation:

Vehicle came to rest against a large oak tree at the driver's side front quarter panel. Vehicle approximately perpendicular to road, facing northeast. Impact force appears to have originated from the driver's side (west/southwest direction), pushing the vehicle sideways and forward into the tree.

Driver's Side (Primary Impact Area):

• Driver's door: Ripped entirely from its hinges. Door found approximately 15 feet behind vehicle, in direction of road. Door detached at both upper and lower hinge mounts – metal sheared, not unbolted. Latch mechanism intact but door frame around latch torn outward. Consistent with extreme outward force from inside or lateral pulling force from outside. Door handle intact.
• Driver's side body panels: Extensive damage – deep gouges, depressions, and tearing along entire driver's side from front fender to rear quarter panel. Damage inconsistent with collision with another vehicle. No paint transfer or debris from another vehicle observed.
• Driver's side window: Completely shattered. Glass fragments found both inside and outside vehicle, with concentration outside. Consistent with window broken from inside out or door torn open and glass falling outward.
• Driver's seat: Empty. Seatbelt unbuckled and retracted. No blood on seat. Minor tears and abrasions on seat fabric – consistent with shoe contact or debris.
• A-pillar (driver's side): Bent outward and upward. Frame deformed, consistent with door being pulled away from pillar with extreme force.

Front End (Secondary Impact Area):

• Front of vehicle, specifically driver's side front bumper and hood, impacted oak tree. Front bumper crushed inward. Hood buckled. Radiator compromised – coolant leak present.
• Airbags: Driver's airbag did not deploy. Front passenger airbag deployed. Side curtain airbags (both sides) did not deploy. Absence of driver's airbag deployment is notable and inconsistent with severity of front-end impact.

Passenger Side:

• Relatively minimal damage. Scratches and scuffs consistent with vegetation and branches. No impact damage from another vehicle.

Rear End:

• Minor damage. No evidence of being struck from behind. Trunk closed and intact.

General:

• Extensive debris inside – glass, mud, leaves, and organic material (twigs, soil).
• Seats: Front passenger and rear seats intact. Rear passenger area shows signs of trauma – blood on rear seats and floor.

Driver's Area:

• Steering wheel bent slightly downward and to the right, consistent with driver being pulled or thrown.
• Ignition on, engine off (stalled after impact). Keys in ignition.
• Gear shift in drive (D). Headlights on. Wipers on (intermittent setting).

Footwell:

• Blood droplets on floor mat (consistent with minor injury or transfer). No blood pool. No large volume.

Center Console / Dashboard:

• No damage. Personal items: phone charger, sunglasses, loose change.

Interior Door Panel (Driver's Side):

• Torn away from inner door frame – same as exterior damage. Window controls intact but pulled loose.

Road Surface:

• Route 202 southbound. Two lanes, asphalt, wet. No visible skid marks on road surface. Rain likely contributed to absence.
• No tire marks indicating braking or swerving – vehicle appears to have left road without deceleration.

Approach Path:

• Vehicle left road from southbound lane, crossing shoulder and drainage ditch (approximately 2 feet deep, 4 feet wide) before entering tree line.
• Tire tracks visible in soft shoulder and ditch area. Tracks are straight – no steering correction. Consistent with vehicle being pushed or carried sideways, not driven.
• Tire impressions match vehicle's make and model.

Drainage Ditch:

• Damage to edge of ditch – mud and grass displaced. Not consistent with car driving through it. More consistent with being placed or dropped across it.

Botanical / Organic:

• Pine needles and birch bark traces found inside vehicle – on driver's seat, in footwell, and on driver's side window frame. These materials are not consistent with immediate roadside vegetation.
• Heavily saturated due to rain; samples collected from interior areas protected from direct rainfall. Species identification pending.

Footprints / Impressions:

• Heavy rain prior to processing degraded most outside prints.
• One partial impression on driver's side, near where door was found. Estimated size 15 shoe with smooth sole, no discernible tread. Print in soft mud, partially flooded. No footprints of this size lead to or from vehicle – only the single impression near the door.

Blood / Biological:

• Minimal blood at vehicle. Blood present is diluted and smeared, not pooled.
• No tissue or biological material suggesting serious injury at vehicle.

• Vehicle sustained damage inconsistent with typical single-vehicle accident. Side impact damage severe, appearing to originate from driver's side, pushing vehicle sideways into tree.
• No skid marks on road. Vehicle left road at 90-degree angle with no indication of braking or steering correction.
• Driver's door ripped off, not opened. Hinge mounts sheared, metal torn – would require significant force.
• Driver's airbag did not deploy despite vehicle hitting tree and sustaining severe damage.
• Botanical evidence inside vehicle does not match local vegetation.
• Size 15 footprint at scene inconsistent with any vehicle occupants (driver's shoes not located).

• Vehicle sustained two distinct impact events: severe side impact causing vehicle to leave road, followed by frontal impact with tree.
• Driver's door forcibly removed with extreme force.
• Driver – Marcus Webb – not at scene. Seatbelt unbuckled. Shoes not recovered from vehicle.
• Blood evidence at scene minimal.
• Botanical evidence inside vehicle inconsistent with local vegetation.
• Size 15 footprint with smooth sole does not match any known individual or responder.

CURRENT STATUS (as of 06:00):

• Marcus Webb remains missing. Search being organized.
• Three occupants transported to Holyoke Medical Center. All unconscious or sedated.

SCENE DESCRIPTION:

Body located during grid search for missing person Marcus Webb (age 17). K-9 unit tracking from initial accident scene led east-northeast into wooded terrain for approximately 0.3 miles (measured: 482 yards from vehicle position). Track was intermittent due to rain dilution. K-9's ability to follow scent was visibly compromised by saturation.

Terrain: Mixed hardwood/conifer forest. Moderate underbrush, heavy leaf litter saturated with water. Ground slope approximately 12 degrees ascending away from road. Ground disturbance significant from road to body location – broken branches, disturbed leaf litter, soil displacement. Rain erosion has smoothed finer details; sharp edges of broken branches and leaves are waterlogged.

• Male, Caucasian, approximate age 17 (confirmed as Marcus Webb).
• Upright position, back against trunk of large oak tree (approximately 24-inch diameter).
• Feet flat on ground, knees slightly bent, heels sunk approximately 2 inches into softened mud.
• Arms extended downward, hands at sides, palms facing slightly outward.
• Facing west-southwest (direction of road / direction of approach).
• Body pinned to tree by wooden object (described below).

Clothing:

• Dark gray hooded sweatshirt (Nike brand). Heavily torn, saturated with water and blood. Blood staining appears diluted, with lighter pinkish margins consistent with rain exposure.
• Black t-shirt underneath. Torn at chest and abdomen. Fabric around wounds frayed and waterlogged.
• Blue jeans (Levi's). Mud-stained, heavily saturated. Blood staining on upper legs diffuse and washed out.
• White athletic socks. No shoes – both feet bare. Socks heavily mudded and waterlogged.
• No jacket. No jewelry. Wallet absent from pockets. Single water-damaged banknote recovered from right front pocket. All other personal effects absent.

Defensive Wounds (Arms / Hands):

• Left forearm: multiple linear lacerations, approximately 4-7 inches in length, parallel and perpendicular. Sharp force trauma. No hesitation marks. Margins of wounds clean but partially macerated due to prolonged water exposure.
• Right hand: deep laceration across palm (approximately 4 inches). Tendon visible. Partial amputation of distal phalanx of right ring finger (missing tip, not recovered).
• Right forearm: contusions and abrasions, consistent with blunt force trauma.
• Fingernails intact, contain organic matter (soil, bark fragments, pine needles). No human tissue observed.

Head / Face:

• Multiple contusions and lacerations to face – left cheek, right orbital ridge, forehead. Lacerations show tissue swelling, consistent with antemortem trauma.
• Nose: possible fracture – swollen, deviated.
• Left eye closed, swollen, discolored. Right eye open, clear cornea.
• No trauma to posterior cranium. Facial expression: fixed open eyes; jaw relaxed, no bite marks on tongue.

Torso / Chest (External Observation):

• Penetrating wound: Wooden object (approximately 3.5-inch diameter at base, tapering to point) driven through center of chest.
• Object enters approximately 2 inches left of sternum, at 4th intercostal space. Object exits through posterior chest wall and penetrates approximately 6 inches into oak tree trunk behind body.
• Object is a tree branch or sapling – approximately 6 feet total length. Proximal end (portion in front of body) deliberately shaped into tapered point. Distal end (behind body) embedded in tree.
• Branch stripped of bark and smaller branches along central 3-foot section. Small branch stub remains near base, suggesting object harvested from nearby tree and modified.
• No surgical-style incisions, no sharp-force dissection, no organ protrusion, no external rib fractures visible beyond single penetrating trauma site. No other wounds to chest or abdomen.

Legs / Feet:

• Mud-stained, no shoes. Socks intact. No defensive wounds on legs.
• Left ankle: moderate swelling (sprain or fracture, pending X-ray). Right knee: abrasion, consistent with impact with ground or vegetation.

• Heavy rainfall has significantly degraded blood trail from vehicle to body. Intermittent droplets and smears present, heavily diluted with rainwater, appearing as faint pinkish smears on leaf litter. Trail traceable but discontinuous.
• Pool at base of tree: approximately 3-foot diameter discoloration of soil. Due to heavy rain, blood pool heavily diluted. Visible reddish-brown stain remains, but standing water and runoff have caused significant lateral spread.
• Blood spatter on lower trunk of oak tree, approximately 2-4 feet from ground level, partially washed off. Residual staining present on north and east sides (sheltered side from prevailing wind and rain).
• Blood on sweatshirt and jeans diffused, with distinct "run" patterns indicative of rain exposure before drying. No blood on distal end (tree-embedded portion) of spear.
• All collected blood samples are diluted. Preservative added to samples immediately upon collection.

• Heavy rain and saturated ground conditions affected footprint preservation.
• Multiple partial footprints found in mud along approach path and at base of tree. Distinct impression preserved in sheltered depression near oak trunk.
• Estimated shoe size: Size 15 (US men's) based on length measurement of best-preserved cast (approximately 12.5 inches).
• Tread Pattern: Sole of footwear appears smooth or heavily worn, with no discernible tread pattern captured in casts. Surface of impression is indistinct, consistent with smooth sole lacking deep grooves, exacerbated by rain erosion and water pooling.
• Casts taken of best-preserved impressions. Detail poor due to water saturation and soil consistency.
• Single barefoot impression, consistent with victim's left foot, present approximately 10 feet from tree. No barefoot impressions match size 15 footwear.

Ground Disturbance:

• Heavy disturbance at base of tree – churned soil, leaf litter displaced. Rain has flattened much of disturbed area.
• Distinct impression of body being positioned against tree visible in mud, with heels sunk into soil.

Botanical Evidence (Collected for Lab Analysis):

• Pine needles (Pinus sylvestris suspected) and birch bark traces (Betula pubescens suspected) collected from:
  • Victim's clothing (interior layers, sheltered from direct rain)
  • Hair
  • Wound margins (embedded in defensive lacerations and chest wound)
• Note: Loose botanical material on victim's outer clothing surfaces largely washed away or waterlogged. Only embedded material remained viable for collection.
• Organic soil particulates collected from wound margins. Distinct from immediate scene's soil composition.

Tree / Spear:

• Wooden spear removed from tree and body at scene (post-photography and measurements). Placed in evidence bag.
• Spear appears cut and shaped with blade or sharp tool. Tapered point consistent with knife or hatchet, not natural breakage.
• Spear approximately 6 feet in length, 3.5-inch diameter at base, tapering to less than 1 inch at tip. Surface waterlogged but intact. Species identification pending.

Oak Tree:

• Penetration depth of spear into tree: 6 inches.
• Wood fibers around penetration site crushed and frayed – consistent with forcible impact, not gradual insertion.

• Victim's position – upright, facing direction of road – is notable.
• Spear-like object intentionally sharpened, not a natural branch shape.
• Amount of blood at scene, despite dilution, consistent with major trauma. Victim does not appear to have been moved after fatal wound inflicted.
• Defensive wounds on forearms and hands extensive and consistent with struggle. Victim likely conscious and actively defending himself prior to fatal wound.
• No shoe impressions of size 15 footwear lead away from tree. Only visible trail is from road to body. Rain obscured or eliminated return path.
• Victim's wallet and shoes not recovered. No additional personal effects found at scene.

• Victim: Marcus Webb, age 17.
• Cause of death appears to be penetrating trauma to chest (wooden object through heart and lungs).
• Extensive defensive wounds suggest victim was alive and resisting prior to death.
• No external evidence of sharp-force dissection, organ removal, or ritualistic mutilation beyond single penetrating trauma and positioning.
• CROSS-CASE REFERENCE Botanical evidence (pine and birch) embedded in wounds is consistent with materials found in two previous Northampton homicides (cases NPD-2026-0412 and NPD-2026-0423). Cross-reference notification sent to Northampton PD.
• Smooth, size 15 footprints inconsistent with victim's own feet and inconsistent with standard law enforcement or emergency responder footwear. No known suspect boots match this description.

Scene released at 14:30 hours. Body transported to Holyoke Medical Center pending autopsy.
