OKAY BUT ARE THESE NORTHAMPTON MURDERS ACTUALLY A BLOOD EAGLE???

If you've been following the news from western Mass (and if you're reading this blog, you probably have), you already know that something really really bad is happening in Northampton.

Two murders. Both insanely brutal. No arrests. No suspects. And the details keep getting weirder.

First there was that dentist, Carl Maretti. Found by the river with his hands and foot cut off, his chest opened up, and his lungs half-pulled out. Police said he bled to death but there was hardly any blood at the scene. Like, where did it all go??

Oxbow crime scene mood
Oxbow conservation area, where Maretti was found. I drove out there last week. Felt like I was being watched. it's my own photo

Then a month later, a librarian named Vanessa Hatvan. Found hanging from a tree at the HIGH SCHOOL. Naked. Head gone. Chest opened. And her lungsβ€”okay this is the part that really got meβ€”her lungs had been pulled out and draped over her ribs like a blanket.

I'm sorry, WHAT?

I read that and I literally dropped my phone.

Because I've heard of something like that before. And I'm pretty sure the police aren't going to tell you about it.

☠️ BLOOD EAGLE. LOOK IT UP. OR DON'T. IT'S GROSS.

Okay so here's the thing. I'm not an expert. I'm not a historian. I don't have a degree in anything useful. I just watch a lot of true crime and read a lot of weird history stuff when I can't sleep (which is most nights, thanks anxiety).

But I've definitely come across something called a "blood eagle" before. It's like, this old Viking execution thing. Super brutal. The sagas talk about it.

The way it works is:

  • They cut open your back along your spine.
  • Then they break your ribs and pull them outward so they look like wings.
  • Then they pull your lungs out through the opening and spread them over the ribs.

So it looks like an eagle. With bloody lungs for wings.

VIKINGS WERE INSANE.

Anyway, the point isβ€”does that not sound EXACTLY like what happened to Vanessa Hatvan?? Lungs draped over ribs?? That's not something a normal killer does. That's someone following a very specific, very old, very messed up instruction manual.

MARETTI WAS PRACTICE. HATVAN WAS THE REAL DEAL.

Here's where it gets interesting.

Maretti's lungs were only partially pulled out. Like the person started doing it and then stopped. Maybe they got spooked. Maybe they ran out of time. Maybe they realized they didn't know what they were doing and had to figure it out as they went.

Hatvan's lungs were fully out and arranged perfectly. Draped. On display.

That's escalation, people. That's someone who tried it once, messed up, learned from their mistakes, and came back a month later to do it right.

Maretti was the practice run. Hatvan was the masterpiece.

And that is TERRIFYING because it means whoever is doing this is still out there. And they're getting better at it.

Trace evidence from the scenes: Scots pine & downy birch. Not native to Massachusetts. This keeps me up at night.

WHY WOULD SOMEONE DO THIS???

I don't know. I really don't. I'm just some person with a blog.

But think about it. A blood eagle isn't just a way to kill someone. It's a statement. In the Viking sagas, they did it to enemies who had done something really bad. Traitors. Cowards. Oath-breakers. And it was also supposedly a sacrifice to Odin, the god of war and death.

So like... who is this person trying to sacrifice? And why?

Maretti was a dentist. A nice guy from what everyone said. No enemies. Doesn't really fit.

Hatvan though? She was a strict librarian. Kids didn't like her. She wrote people up for talking too loud. She gave detentions. She was kind of a hardass from what I've read. Not saying she deserved to die obviously. But maybe the killer saw her as an "enemy" of some kind? A symbol of authority?

Or maybe the victims don't matter at all. Maybe the ritual is the whole point. Maybe this person just wants to feel powerful and connected to something ancient and scary.

Alsoβ€”and this is the part that keeps me up at nightβ€”there was pine needles and birch bark found on both bodies. Like, embedded in the wounds. And guess what? The species aren't even from Massachusetts. They're from northern Europe. Scotland pine or something? And some kind of birch that doesn't grow here.

The killer brought a piece of Europe to Northampton. The trees don't belong there. Neither does this ritual.

⚠️ WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

This is the part where I freak out.

Two murders. Thirty-two days apart. The first one was incomplete. The second one was perfect.

What's the third one going to look like?

Because ritualists don't just stop. They escalate. They get more confident. They take bigger risks.

Hatvan was left at a SCHOOL. In plain sight. That's someone who WANTS to be seen.

So yeah. I'm scared. And if you live in western Mass, you probably should be too.

The police aren't telling us anything. The media is just rehashing the same few details. And somewhere out there, someone is planning the next one.

Stay safe. Lock your doors. Don't go walking alone near trees.

Seriously.

πŸ“Œ UPDATE (April 29): Someone in the comments said the blood eagle might not even be real. That it might just be something the Vikings made up in their stories. Okay cool. But SOMEONE is doing it now. So maybe it doesn't matter if it was real a thousand years ago. It's real now.

πŸ“Œ UPDATE (April 30): Another person asked if I've contacted the police about this theory. No. I'm a blogger. They're not going to listen to me. Also I don't want to be on their radar tbh.

πŸ“Œ UPDATE (May 1): Okay there's been another murder. A 16-year-old girl. I can't even process this. I'll write something when I stop shaking.

πŸ“Ή Northampton PD hasn't released any CCTV. Why not? That bothers me almost as much as the murders.

This is so scary. I live in Amherst and I'm literally never leaving my house again.

The blood eagle is almost certainly a literary invention. There's no archeological evidence it was ever actually performed.

Okay but someone is doing it NOW so maybe it doesn't matter if Vikings did it or not???

My daughter goes to that high school. Please take this post down. You're just spreading fear.

The pine and birch thing is the key. European trees. European ritual. The killer isn't from here.

That's what I'm saying!!! It's like someone brought something over with them.

Or maybe it's just a coincidence and you're making things worse by posting wild theories.
JessHolloway (author) β€’ April 29, 2026 at 2:10 PM
Yeah maybe. But what if I'm not?

I work near the Oxbow. The whole area feels wrong now. Can't explain it.
NorseNerd99 β€’ April 30, 2026 at 5:00 PM
Even if the blood eagle wasn't real, the fact that someone is doing this means they BELIEVE it's real. That's almost worse.

I live two blocks from the Harrogate house. The police had the whole street blocked off last night. I can't sleep. I can't stop refreshing the news.
